Black Friday ... a new twist.

Today is Black Friday...
So I was looking around my house and I realized that I do not own hardly any black pieces.
But I do have a PASSION for Black Americana.

(This picture hangs in my kitchen)

Some think this is a negative portrayal of our history and culture.
I believe that it is part of our past that we should never forget.

I collect these .. All God's Children.
( The lady I bought these from had nnooooo idea what she had. I got my entire collection for 3.00!!)

They are created by V. Holcombe.
This is called God Is Love. (#162)
She reminds me of playing dress up when Angelique and I were little girls.
(Sorry about my finger..I am too tired to photshop today lol)

A figurine of church ladies sitting on a pew.
Who dosen't have an adored grandmother that fell asleep from time to time?

 Speaking of grandmothers..
This is my great-grandmother Daisy. I never met her but she instilled a long legacy of devout Lord
loving people I know as family.
(Trust and believe she never fell asleep in church. She ruled with an iron fist. )

And this is my mamma.
Valedictorian of her class, she instilled education as a virtue in all of us.
I love her for that so very much more.
Love you mamma!!

I am very proud of my family and my heritage.
I would not trade it for anything in the world.
How can we ever know where we are going  if we never know where we came from?
Embrace who you are and always ...

love your inner little girl.

At least we aren't tarnished

So, my sister and I were talking on the phone the other day...
Like we always do. ( Literally, we call each other like 15 times a day.. especially if we have an off day together.)

( Wouldn't  this scene be lovely?? I mean really? Who does that? It is often more like this..)

(That is more like it.)
So she was mentioning her passion for tarnished silver. Then it dawned on me...I have some tarnished silver!!
Mr. H gave it to me when we were married. I had forgotten all about it. The silver was under my kitchen sink.
So, I tell Angelique to hold on. I go in the kitchen and ..

oooh!! There it is !! Three pieces that have now turned black. ( I'm not kidding either, they were BLACK.)
I pick up the phone and tell my sis of my find.
I cannot repeat what she said....HA HA!!!
I clean them up - not too clean I want some tarnish on them still.
( White toothpaste and LOTS of elbow grease. I was up til 2 a.m. cleaning silver.)

Tell me what you think...

I added some flowers to this.. it looks like a small ice bucket lol.

thought some fruit (that I added a foil technique to) would make this candy dish
more of a centerpiece.

And then I found something that I have not seen in years....

It is a friendship ball. My sister and I have passed this silver beauty back and forth for at least 10 years.
If you do not know what one is- well, it is a ball that you place a small gift in. It dates back to victorian times.

She gave it back to me Mother's day. I thought she had forgotten it.
When I found it.. a tear almost dropped. ( I do not cry easy.) This silver trinket has endured years of sisterhood.  Endless telephone calls, shopping and road trips, and even an argument or two along the way. But most important it is a friendship ball given to me by my best friend.

P.S. No, Angelique you still cannot have the candy dish....

Queen of the Frugal ......

So, In my fairy tell world my home would look just like this!! I am in love with country shabby chic/French/Black Americana. That's how I would describe my style. I know, I know - hodge podge. But it works.. for me. I have very expensive taste. My family will tell you my motto : "If it's not fur or bling...it don't mean a thing!" ( Pardon my grammar.. I had to make it rhyme. ) However, reality is I am the QUEEN of the CHEAP CHEAP!!  And due to the current economy .. I liiiiivvveee for the deal.

See this little beauty? I found her sitting on the curb of my neighbor's yard. She whispered my name as I walked by. Honestly, I didn't even see her at first. "Misty, Misty. I am over here!" So, I walked over and checked her out. "Please take me home with you..." How could I turn her away? She was practically in tears. I have a soft spot. Brought her home and then she became a diva," I'm cold!" Okay okay already...

So I gave her a throw and a pillow and my favorite doll!! ( Told you she was a diva! ) And now she resides in our living room and for free. (Once again, the total diva.)

This handsome lad.. well, he is a different story. Rather sad really. Found him resting at a resale store. Poor thing had been there a month and no one had even so much as glanced at him. I found out why .. He is really puke GREEN with envy. (Literally). But, we made a deal and he came home with me for 10 whole dollars. Covered him up with a suede red slip cover added my famous Waverly roses, some pillows, and a crochted throw I made and Viola!!! (He still grumbles about the flowers..such a guy!)

But my all time favorite find is this beauty!!! She was head cheerleader AND prom queen. But I think she got into a scrap match over some guy. If you look RRREEEAAALLLL hard in her lower right corner you can see her scar. Tiny, I know. She is soooo vain that she down right refused to be sold at full price. I mean really? She is solid cherry wood. So, I got her for .............$25.00!!! I almost fainted when the shop owner
(at a major furniture store) told me. So I threw the cash in his hand a raced home.( I do not know why that picture looks sideways.. it's really not.)

I made these lamps just for her . The lamp shades are cheap $1 each. I painted them read and black and attached the trim and the feathers. The bases were $1 each at a local dollar store. Awesome - I know!!

The Centerpiece is a box that was lovingly given to me by my sis. And if you don't know Hobby Lobby has a sale on their florals every other week- 50%. ( I actually use to work there in my spare time JUST so I could get the discount and the 50%.) The flowers were $10 for the lot.

There you have it, my secret is out. I am frugal. No, CHEAP- in the purest form of the word. But you know what?    It's good to be a QUEEN.   ( She kinda looks like me - just in pink....)
